Early February, Sri Lankans embark on carrying out celebrations to commemorate Independence which was received in 1948 following a near five-century colonial rule. Independence Day falls on the 4th of February. These celebrations are always grand and often include processions happening around the Independence Commemoration Hall or Independence Square.
The Navam Perehera is held on the full moon Poya day in February and celebrates ordain of Lord Buddha’s initial disciples, Sariputta and Maha Moggalana. The celebrations are held at one of Colombo’s most prestigious temples, the Gangaramaya Temple that is nestled close to the Beira Lake. The procession is not only breathtakingly beautiful which over a hundred decorated elephants, dances from Udarata (up-country) and Pahatharaya (low-country) dances. The celebrations last two days and are the cultural highlights of February.

Haryana Crafts Festival – 01st – 15th February 2014
The Surajkund International Crafts Mela is an opportunity to improve people to people contacts and goodwill between Sri Lanka and India. Sri Lanka to participate as the partner nation in this world renowned Crafts Festival in the State of Haryana. Around 23 countries are to participate in this event. The exhibition will attracts an average of 100,000 visitors daily.

Sri Lanka celebrates the gaining of her independence from Colonial rule with magnificent pomp and pageantry and the spirit of patriotism resonates in every street corner on the island’s National Day. The national flag is hoisted and the national anthem sung, the traditional lamp is lit and the processions begin, complete with meticulously coordinated military parades, firing of canons and various religious and cultural performances, all to pay a tribute to forefathers of the land for their glorious feat. The celebrations open to all, continued year after year, signifying the continued united efforts as the people of one nation come together to celebrate her cherished sovereignty.
Donald Steel Golf Tournament
The 15th Annual Donald Steel Golf tournament will take place at the spectacular Victoria Golf & Country Resort in Kandy. A much looked forward to event in the Sri Lanka Golf calendar, this amateur golf tournament attracts over 100 players from about 15 countries including golfers from the UK, Canada and New Zealand and ensures the highest levels of sportsmanship. The tournament is organised in honour of Donald Steel, the architect of the challenging and picturesque Victoria golf course.

Navam Perahera Colombo – 14 FEBRUARY 2014
The Navam Perahera festival of Gangarama, a Buddhist perahera with nearly 1000 performers and 100 richly clad elephants parades the streets of Colombo on the full moon Poya day of February.
